Feature Friday : Sa(d)a Ramirez

by kranARI

Some (and by some, I mean one) people have been asking to know more about Sara Ramirez. It is always my pleasure to indulge the whims of my readers and fork out some cool information on a woman who, I find strong, inspiring and vastly talented.

Sara seems to me like the type of person who not unlike her character on Grey’s Anatomy, is very bubbly, has a great sense of humour and is easily approachable. Her bigger than life personality is simply a reflection of her passion, cultural upbringing and artistic nature.

At first glance you might think Sara was purely Latina in background but she is actually half Irish as well. Coming from a mixed background myself, I can empathise at how quickly people draw conclusions based upon how you look or what you sound like. Though she was born in Mexico, she moved to San Diego before even reaching her teenage years and was often sadly the target of childish racist remarks and cultural phobias.

Learning to stand up for herself and possessing quite a high level of self awareness, she was able to slowly acquire the confidence to pursue a career in the performing arts.

For such an intelligent mind, generally geared towards sciences and mathematics, she opted instead to explore her creative side after being accepted at the prestigious Julliard school of performing arts.

Soon after, she was exploring Broadway roles and quickly found critical acclaim for her parts in The Gershwins’ Fascinating Rhythm and of course Spamalot, which won her both a Tony and a Outer Critics Circle Award.

However, it is not her struggle of being in the cultural minority of actresses whose talent wins critical acclaim that makes us want to get to know more about her, but her electric personality both on screen and television. Sara is a constant reminder to young women that people can be sexy and attractive not because of their weight or their beauty but also because of their capacity to light up a room with their presence, their smile and their charisma.

What truly makes her attractive is her ability to embrace her true self, just as she is, culturally, linguistically, academically, artistically, physically and intellectually. This is why it is so great to have her on our screens as a role model of diversity and talent so that women can finally look up to something real; something that they can actually strive to be.

So without making this sound too corny, have a further look into the career of Ms Ramirez, her theatre work, her television role as Callie Torrez in Grey’s Anatomy and her interviews and hopefully be inspired to embrace those parts of yourself which set you apart from the crowd and make you unique.

Her voice is insane in this following clip. (MAD libs is a phrasal template word game where one player prompts another for a list of words to substitute for blanks in a story; these word substitutions have a humorous effect when the resulting story is then read aloud.)

If you’d like to read more on Sara Ramirez, I would suggest checking out her interview with Sara Witness on

Moody Monday : She might be the one to watch

by kranARI

Happy Monday everyone! Special treat this week…probably due to the good weather which has lifted my spirits over the weekend. These following people have risen to my attention as up and coming artists slash performers this past month so I thought I might share the enthusiasm.

the mummers

The Mummers front woman Raissa Khan-Panni, is raising eye-brows as a fab member of the Brighton-based UK band.

You might know this tiny redhead as the obsessive-compulsive super cute Emma Pillsbury of ‘Glee’. In real life she is            Jayma Mays.

Jessica-Capshaw photo shoot

Jessica Capshaw might be Kate Capshaw’s daughter and Steven Spielberg’s stepdaughter but she’s definitely captured our heart’s in Grey’s Anatomy this season. She plays Callie’s girlfriend – Arizona Robbins. Now who names their kid Arizona?

mamie gummer

Another famous offspring as explored last week in : Famous spawn It runs in the FamilyMamie Gummer is paving her way through the theatre and film world as we speak. Having worked with the chick, I definitely thing she has something good to bring.

Our second ‘Glee’ graduate definitely has a sweetness no predecessor has managed to bring to the screen. Meet Diana Agron.

carey mulligan

Not sure if Carey Mulligan can get her accent straight on her new film ‘Wall Street : Money never sleeps’ but the girl has undeniable talent that is bound to shine through in many films to come.
